The Armfield multipurpose processing vessel is capable of carrying out all these functions as a standalone, mobile unit. Its mobility allows it to be positioned in the laboratory next to other equipment for which it may be used, and it also allows for easy storage. The hygienically designed, jacketed vessel has a working volume of 10 to 15 liters, enabling experiments and demonstrations without the need for large quantities of raw materials. An electric heating element located at the bottom of the jacket heats water in the jacket, which in turn gently heats the contents of the vessel. This method ensures gentle heat transfer to ingredients, which are often heat-sensitive, and prevents local 'hot spots' through convective heat distribution. Cooling is achieved by simply dosing water from the mains supply through the jacket. When cooling, chilled water is circulated in a closed loop via an ice bank circulator integrated into the equipment base. A variable-speed emulsifier with various emulsifying head options can be lowered into the process liquid. Hands-on experience can be gained by students, and full instrumentation allows for complete process documentation. An automatic valve changeover system enables straightforward operation, allowing the student or trainee to simply select the required process, rather than operating a series of manual valves. The contents are indirectly heated via a heating cartridge (16) located in the bottom of the jacket. The heating is protected against overheating by an adjacent thermostat (17). An emulsifier (2) can be inserted into the vessel using the locking handle (5). The on/off and speed control (14) for this device is located on the motor housing and not on the operator panel. A green operating light (7) indicates when the emulsifier motor is running. The emulsifier head (3) can be easily replaced with any of the alternative heads supplied by simply removing the thumb nuts securing the head to the drive shaft. A lid (6) prevents airborne contamination during extended heating treatment. Chilled water is circulated from an ice bank (12) located beneath the processing vessel. After a build-up period for forming the ice bank, this chilled water is supplied to the vessel jacket and cools the vessel contents to a temperature suitable for storage/hardening. Usually, after initial rapid cooling with circulating cold water from the mains supply, the ice bank comes into operation. 3-way valves (10) and (11) serve to automatically select between open-circuit cooling or closed-loop chilled water circulation. In both cases, the water passes through a flow meter (13), which allows the flow rate to be manually adjusted using the control valve (14).
