A chilled water unit (also known as a chiller) is an indirect expansion cooling production system. This means it uses an intermediate fluid to transfer “cold” to the emitters. There is therefore no refrigerant circulating through the system: in the case of a chilled water unit, water (pure or glycolated) serves as the intermediate fluid, used here as the heat transfer medium.
