The Mercedes-Benz Citaro Hybrid is equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that works in conjunction with the standard diesel engine. It is not a fully electric or plug-in hybrid bus, but rather an intelligent energy recovery system designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
Here’s how it works:
* During braking, the system recovers energy that would otherwise be lost.
* This energy is stored in roof-mounted supercapacitors.
* When the bus accelerates or starts from a standstill, the stored energy powers a small electric motor that assists the diesel engine.
* This reduces fuel consumption, lowers CO2 emissions, and provides smoother acceleration.
The hybrid system is a separate 48 V electrical system, independent from the bus’s normal 24 V electrical system. Because it operates at low voltage, it is safe, reliable, and does not require the high-voltage components found in full hybrid or electric buses.
The bus is always driven by the diesel engine; the electric motor only provides additional assistance during acceleration and does not drive the bus on its own.
This technology typically reduces fuel consumption by around 5–8% in city driving while maintaining the reliability and operational simplicity of a conventional diesel bus.
