Plunge Rolling: The thread rolling tools with the same pitch as the workpiece form the thread by penetrating the workpiece up to the nominal diameter. The maximum thread length equals the width of the rolling tools.

Through-feed Rolling: Used when thread length is greater than the width of the rolling tools. Through-feed tools have three sections—the entry, the calibration zone, and the exit. Knurling rolls have no pitch and are swiveled at the lead angle of the profile to be rolled.

Lead Rolls differ from knurling rolls by having a pitch in the profile. The sum of the lead angle and the swivel angle results in the lead angle in the workpiece.
