In the manufacturing process for spiral bevel gears, the quality of the
gearing tools used plays a decisive role. Especially in dry milling, high gear
quality and long tool life can only be achieved with precisely set cutter heads.
The Oerlikon cutter head setting and testing device CS 200 enables quick
and easy adjustment of individual cutters, checks their position, and
documents the measurement results. The measurement process on the CNC-controlled
inspection device is semi-automated: The respective actions required for the
process are clearly displayed on the screen via operator guidance. The
positioning of the individual cutters in the cutter head and the height of the
cutter tips is performed largely automatically via a special process and is
simultaneously documented in a run-out diagram. A subsequent measurement
process checks the radial position of the inner and outer cutting edges of all
cutters in the cutter head. If certain test parameters of the cutters do not

comply with tolerance specifications, they can be individually re-positioned.
Through the combination of a semi-automated adjustment process, operator-guided
setup actions, and an automatic measuring process, cutter heads can be adjusted
conveniently, quickly, and with high precision.
