How reverse osmosis works – RO
Reverse osmosis (RO system) relies on the principle of osmosis, observed in nature—such as cherries cracking after a summer rain. The cherry contains a concentrated solution (cherry juice), while the raindrop represents a dilute solution. The cherry’s skin—a semi-permeable membrane—equalizes the concentrations by allowing the solvent (water) to pass through, seeking balance. Since the cherry’s volume cannot expand, pressure builds up (osmotic pressure), eventually causing the cherry to burst. Reverse osmosis reverses this process. Pressure is applied to the concentrated solution to overcome its osmotic pressure, forcing the solvent through the membrane while all dissolved substances remain on the concentrate side.
Reverse osmosis water filter (RO)
Reverse osmosis (RO system) is a membrane process that retains ions and particulate matter in water, reversing the natural osmotic process. In RO systems, saline water (e.g. softened municipal water) is pressurized through semi-permeable, spiral-wound membrane elements. Only the solvent—pure water—passes through the membrane, resulting in a low-salt “permeate.” All other water components become concentrated and are discharged into the drain as “concentrate.”
Reverse osmosis system (RO)
On an industrial scale, reverse osmosis systems are not operated as dead-end filtration but as cross-flow filtration. The raw water feed is separated into purified water (permeate, 75–80% yield, with approx. 2% residual salinity) and concentrate, which carries away all other water components continuously. Reverse osmosis is often employed in ultrapure water systems for green hydrogen production.
