How reverse osmosis works – RO:
Reverse osmosis (RO system) is based on the natural principle of osmosis, observable in phenomena like cherries bursting after a summer rain. The cherry contains a concentrated solution—cherry juice—while the raindrop is the dilute solution. The cherry skin acts as a semi-permeable membrane, equalizing concentrations as solvent enters the cherry. As the cherry’s volume cannot expand, pressure builds—this is osmotic pressure. In nature, this causes the cherry to burst. By reversing this principle, a reverse osmosis system is created: pressure is applied to the concentrated solution to overcome its osmotic pressure, causing the solvent to pass through the membrane while all dissolved substances remain on the concentrate side.

Reverse osmosis (RO system) is a membrane technology that removes both ions and particulate matter from water, effectively reversing the natural osmosis process. In RO systems, softened municipal water (for example) is forced under pressure through semi-permeable membranes, typically spiral-wound elements. Only the solvent—pure water—passes through the membrane and is collected as permeate with a very low salt content. All other water constituents become concentrated in the reject stream, the concentrate, which must then be discharged to the drain.
