The Johnford DMC series double column bridge milling machine with moving table is constructed from a one-piece Meehanite cast iron bridge/column structure, reportedly occupying 30 percent less floor space than comparable C-frame vertical machining centers. The bridge mill is available in both moving table and sliding column (fixed table) configurations, ranging from 91 x 91 x 76 cm up to 18 x 6 meters. The bridge milling machines feature a long base with full support of the table over the entire 130 cm Y-axis travel, enabling machining of heavy workpieces.
On the Y and Z axes, a constant weight is supported at all times, while only the X-axis carries dynamic loads. This results in precise machining with tight tolerances during high-speed operations. As there is no table overhang, the inclination and yaw angle of the X-axis are eliminated. The distance between the spindle center line and the column is minimized, providing extra rigidity. The machine’s heavily ribbed cast iron construction ensures longevity and optimum surface finish. The combination of dual chip augers and a conveyor belt ensures complete chip removal with minimal manual cleaning. Moreover, finite element analysis (FEA) is used in the design of each bridge mill, simulating the effects of realistic conditions such as vibration, heat, fluid flow, and other physical influences.
