The LECO C230 Carbon Analyzer is a microprocessor-based, software-controlled instrument for measuring the carbon and sulfur content in metals, ores, ceramics, and other inorganic materials. The C230 uses an induction furnace and measures carbon via infrared absorption.

The infrared (IR) source consists of nichrome wire, which is heated to 8,500 °C by resistance heating. The IR source emits visible energy as well as all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. Carbon dioxide can be used to illustrate the process; the same principle applies for sulfur detection. Carbon dioxide absorbs IR energy at a specific wavelength within the IR spectrum. Energy from the IR source is absorbed when the gas flows through the cell, thereby preventing it from reaching the IR detector.
An IR cell is used as both a reference and a measurement cell. Total carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is continuously and simultaneously recorded. The initial reference level or baseline for the detector is set by flushing the cell with oxygen to expel remaining atmospheric gases.
