Das Objekt befindet sich im Industriegebiet Karhula, direkt bei der Stadt Kotka im Südosten Finnlands. Karhulan Valimo wurde in den 1880er Jahren gegründet. Im Jahr 1902 wurde die Gießerei mit einer Holzschleiferei, einer Glasfabrik, einer Ziegelei und einer Maschinenbauwerkstatt zur Karhula Oy fusioniert. 1915 wurden die Karhula-Werke an die Ahlström Corporation verkauft.
